A. Yuck! Microwave? Are you serious? Why don't you just pitch the steak in the trash now and don't even bother with the microwave, since that's where it will end up anyhow. Do you want to eat steak or dog food? Don't cook it in the nuker! Light the broiler or grill and don't be lazy about it, otherwise you wasted your money.

Can you cook shrimp and chicken together or do you need to cook them separate and mix afterwards?
Q. If so, do you cook the chicken first and then add the shrimp? How long do you cook each of these meats for anyway (the chicken is sliced VERY thin)? And just how long does fresh shrimp keep in the fridge? How long do these items keep AFTER you've cooked them?

A. If you are cooking this for yourself and not for a group, you can cook the chicken and then add the shrimp after the chicken has cooked for a few minutes. If the chicken is very thin, and you don't specify how thin it is, cook it until the pink is gone. Some chefs won't brown chicken chunks, if adding to a dish like chicken fetachini. Parboiled chicken can be finished in under five minutes. For the shrimp, watch for the color change, also under five minutes. So you will want to stay on watch at the stove while cooking these. Sautee'ing is the way I would do it. If you are cooking this for a group and are unsure if everyone is able to eat shrimp, keep them separated, from storage to prep to cooking. Some people have a very strong allergic… [cont.]

How to cook good, soft, fully cooked chapatis on a coil gas?
Q. I recently came to USA where V have coil gases mostly instead of the normal flame gas in India. I face a lot of problem while cooking chapatis as I cannot understand how to make them soft & nicely cooked on the coil gas. I do have a TAWA but still the chapatis either remain half cooked from some places or they get overcooked n hard. I cant figure out how long to keep it on the gas. Also if i cook it with the same method as i did in India to get good, soft n fully cooked chapatis, i always fail. Please suggest what i can do.

A. It sounds like you need to replace your tawa with a solid, heavy-duty cast iron griddle, like this one: As you've discovered, electric stoves don't heat pans consistently. The good thing about a heavy cast iron pan is that it'll absorb heat & distribute it evenly. Next time you want to make chapatis, put your cast iron griddle on the stove & start heating it (at your normal chapati-cooking temperature) before you start rolling out the dough. Once you have all your chapatis rolled out, check to make sure the griddle is hot enough...if so, you should be able to cook them with no problems. Just make sure you never wash your cast iron griddle with soap & water...just rub it clean with a paper towel & let it cool. If you have stubborn,… [cont.]

What song should David Cook sing in the Finale next week?
Q. David Cook has so many memorable performances. As Simon has said, he deserves to win because he has done enough in the past 11 weeks. Comparison to the charming Archuleta is pointless. It's Cook-to-Cook comparison now. Usually, the final two sing a song they've sung from the past themes... Which of his past performances do you think Cook should doa a repeat?

A. What a question!!! I believe he was magnificient every week. It's difficult to choose from his past performances. Right from Hollywood week to last week(what a blast!) he's been brilliant. My favorite is Always be my baby. I loved everything from top 3 night. Happy together was a big fav with me. I loved Lionel Richie's Hello and Andrew Webber's Music of the Night. Eleanor Rigby, Baba O'Riley, Billie Jean, All I really Need is you, I'm Alive, Day tripper, whoa...I might just name every performance. Erm lets leave it upto him to decide, I really can't choose...if i had my way i'd ask for every single performance to be done again. David Cook is the best singer on the planet and I could spend the rest of my life listening to his voice over… [cont.]

People who cook for only themselves but want to eat something different everyday, how do you do it?
Q. I just moved out of my parents house. I'll be living alone now and need to cook for myself. I have no problem cooking, but I don't want to constantly eat leftovers. I know you can say "well cook in small portions," but how is that done? Are there any tips? Thanks.

A. My best advice is to cook up your protein one way, then eat it in a few ways. For example, Chicken breast. Grill the chicken, For the first night have it whole with veggies or baked potatoes, then the next night have it shredded up in a fajita, then the next night have it sliced up over a salad. For the following night put it in an omlette with some cheese. You get the idea.

A. Dead, unfrozen shellfish should always be cooked live. If it's dead and unfrozen, bacteria multiplies at an exponential rate.

How do I cook large chicken breasts so that I can be sure the inside is cooked?
Q. I have 2 LARGE chicken breasts marinating to make for dinner tonight. I was planning to cook them on the stove top this evening, but how do I cook them so that the inside is cooked all the way and the outside is not burnt? Low heat, then high to brown it? Or will that just make it tough? It is boneless, skinless breasts.

A. You don't specify your recipe, so I'm not sure exacty how you're cooking them. You could butterfly them to make then cook more evenly. Usually, you brown first to seal in the moisture, then reduce heat and finish in the oven or with some liquid.

How do you cook all risks out of chicken?
Q. I am new to cooking, and I cooked some chicken breasts in the oven without cleaning them first. I'm concerned about microbes or whatever, and I was going to chop the mostly cooked chicken into smaller pieces and cook them in oil. I don't want to waste the chicken, even if it doesn't taste spectacular. Any insights are greatly appreciated.

A. Baked potatoes will take a least one hour at 325 degrees. I would recomment 1 hour 15 minutes to be safe.

How come when I cook chicken the bread crumbs burn but the chicken doesn't cook enough?
Q. I am cooking a recipe from Betty Crocker, the Ranch Chicken, and when I cook it on Medium-High heat, the (store bought) bread crumbs burn but the chicken isn't cooked through. Being a *really* novice cook, I'm freaking out because the crumbs are black, but the chicken inside isn't cooked at all! What gives? What am I doing wrong? Do I need to flatten the chicken?

A. well, your burner may cook too hot, each ranges 'medium high' cooks a little differently. Try cooking med or med low, you can cook the meat then turn it up to brown, just keep an eye on it. The thing about cooking, it's trial and error, keep it going you'll get the hang of it, happy cooking :-)

Cooking utensils or method that we can use to cook without/less oil?
Q. I've watched a tv programme(Spore) some years ago...The couple shows how to cook food by using only the fat from the meat. Is it b'cos of the cooking utensils or the method that allows cooking without adding oil? Any idea who is the cook also?
Asked by TwinkleL - Sat Apr 12 09:15:40 2008 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments
A. You only need to use oil if you are frying or sauteing meat (chicken, pork or red meat). If you use a grill pan, you do not add oil. You would just season or marinate the meat- red meat, pork or chicken before cooking. Even seasoning with just salt and pepper is good. The key is to not over cook the meat, then it is nice and juicy. You also do not use oil if you roast or broil meats in the oven. Cooking spray is another way to cut down on the use of oil. Before cooking any meat on the stove top, you always must make sure your pan is hot enough. Pans should be preheated on medium-high to high heat. Once you can sprinkle it with water and the droplets dance and sizzle, then it is ready.

A. If they aren't already in links and still a rope sausage, cut them into 5 inch links. Place them on a microwave safe plate around the edges, about 4 each plate. Cook on high about 3-4 mins, turn over and cook another 3-4 mins. Place the cut browned links in your sauce. don't tell them it was miked and they'll never know.

A. About 5 hr on low or 3 hr on high. I wouldn't cook it any longer than 6 on low or 4 on high. When it starts to turn dark colored has cooked too long. You could add 1/2 cup water. Save juice and freeze. Use later for bean soup. Or you could drain juice in a pan and bring to a boil. If it's really flavorful add a cup of water. Bring to a boil and thicken with mixture of cornstarch and water.

Save juice and freeze. Use later for bean soup. Or you could drain juice in a pan and bring to a boil. If it's really flavorful add a cup of water. Bring to a boil and thicken with mixture of cornstarch and water.

A. My suggestion is took cook something latin or french. The cuban dish ropa veija or the french dish beef daube. Both start with chuck steak about 2 lbs 1 large onion, 3 carrots,2 banana peppers) If you want a latin dish add cilantro, 2 table spoons of plain vineger and 2 of red wine vineger ,18-20 olives with pimento chopped, 1/4 cup of chicken broth, garlic4-6 cloves) (salt and pepper to taste) 8 oz can of tomato sauce Cook slowly in a cast iron pot on low for 4-5 hours or us a slow cooker and cook for 9-10 hrs. You know that the meat is done is when you can just pull meat apart with a 2 forks. Remove meat and shred and then add back to juices. At the final 5 minutes add more chopped cilantro with some a few more chopped olives. (c [cont.]

How do you cook chicken so that it tastes really good?
Q. Last time I tried to cook chicken the meat texture was rubbery and it tasted bland. I'm planning to cook with the boneless chicken breast again, what should I soak it in and what kind of seasoning should I use to make it taste really good? Also, how long should it cook for so that I know it's cooked well? Thank you!

What the heck should I cook for my in-laws?
Q. So, I'm a white girl married to a very American Mexican man. His family tends to cook traditional Mexican meals & once in while meatball sandwiches or hamburgers. I love to cook & want to make them a the Cajun dish of red beans & rice (sorta like gumbo) with a salad & bread. After I told him, he made a comment that his family is Mexican. I know his family well & think they'd like it. I think it is just him wanting his mom to cook. I don't want to put them to work when they come down. What should I cook? I thought about carnitas tacos, sticking with what I want to cook or giving up & ordering out. Open to ANY suggestions...

A. Go with the red beans and rice, only throw in a little more tomatoes and peppers, and call it Spanish Rice. You could serve it in a green pepper, kinda like a stuffed pepper. Along with you could serve crab cakes or fish tacos, for something a little unusual. For a good appetizer, a friend of mine rolled the following mixture in tortillas and then cut them into bite sized pieces: cream cheese, salsa, shredded cheese, and black olives. You never know, you could introduce them to something that they end up really loving.
