What is it like to study in a cooking school?
Q. Is it hard or what? How would you describe the cooking school culture?
Asked by Mary - Fri Nov 12 12:35:08 2010 - Other - Education - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Cooking school is like any other school, there's intense amounts of studying, homework and in class tests that have to be accomplished. Aside from that there are some major differences. First and foremost most culinary institutes are private organizations that are completely funded by you (The student). Which means two things, firstly they are going to be more expensive than say community college, and secondly that they don't have to follow the strictest rule system about accredidation and or graduation policy. Is cooking school the way to go? Or a cooking degree from a university?
Q. I'm a junior and looking into applying for college. I'm interested in Le Cordon Bleu in Orlando but i'm wondering if getting the degree would look better coming from a 4 year college OR coming from a school specializing in my degree? And which would i learn more in? Please help!

A. There's another option... see if there are any vocational schools or community colleges in your area that offer culinary training. Community colleges (also referred to as "junior colleges") are two-year institutions that offer Associates degrees - some people go there for their first two years of college and then transfer to a university to finish their bachelors. The benefit is that you save a lot of money because the tuition is dirt cheap. CC's often have vocational programs - like culinary training. So, if you can find one in your area, maybe you could study Culinary Arts and get an Associate's degree in Business or something else... that way you're covered in case you change your mind... and you're prepared for the other… [cont.]

A. Visit They have a solid program founded on techniques. This is a career focused school. She does have to have a high school dipoma or a GED so it sounds like you havea couple of years to plan. Unfortunately, culinary school is expensive and she will leave as a line cook, which tends to earn at top scale 11-12 per hour.

They will have a place on the website to sign up for more information. You can register and they will send you lots of brochures and stuff so that you can learn all about how they operate.
